Tackling Online Terrorist Content
The Global Network on Extremism and Technology (GNET) has released a new report regarding cooperation between law enforcement and technology companies in an effort to address online terrorist content. Terrorists use propaganda to recruit sympathizers and encourage violence, but this information can also be used to track and intercept attacks. Ideally, law enforcement and technology companies collaborating in their counterterrorism efforts will help prevent violence and death. This report discusses the “impediments to such collaboration,” such as “different cultures and operating procedures” and “concerns about censorship.”
GNET selected a panel of interviewees made up of law enforcement, tech companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and subject experts. Four themes that came up amongst their interview findings and became the focus of the report are: 1. Shared appreciation of the threat; 2. Progress to date; 3. Current challenges; and 4. Next steps.
Read the report to learn more about the current challenges and proposed recommendations for future collaborative efforts.
